School Board incumbents file in Bertie

WINDSOR – Two incumbents and one political newcomer have filed for the Bertie County Board of Education.

When the filing period opened on June 9, District 3 incumbent Emma H. Johnson of Aulander filed for another four-year term. Johnson currently serves as Chair of the Bertie School Board.

Also filing on opening day was Bryan A. Ruffin of Lewiston-Woodville. Ruffin will challenge District 4 School Board incumbent Alton H. Parker of Roxobel. Parker filed on June 12 to retain his seat.

The District 2 seat on the School Board is also open during this election cycle. That seat is currently held by Rickey Freeman, who had not filed as of June 18.

Also part of the current filing period are two seats on the Bertie County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors. Those seats are currently held by Robert Hoggard of Windsor and James Pugh of Lewiston-Woodville. Both men are seeking reelection as Pugh filed on June 9 while Hoggard made his reelection bid known on June 16.

Those wishing to file for any of these seats must do so by 12 noon on Monday, July 7 at the Bertie County Board of Elections office in Windsor.

Filing fees may be paid with cash (up to $50) or with an individual check or money order, made payable to the Bertie County Board of Elections. Business or corporate checks are not accepted.

In Hertford County, filing is open for two seats on the Soil and Water District Board of Supervisors. Those seats are currently held by John David Simons and James Mason. Filing ends at 12 noon on Monday, July 7 at the Hertford County Board of Elections office in Winton.

July 7 also marks the opening of the filing period for the Hertford County Board of Education. Three seats – now held by Dennis Deloatch, John Horton and Shelia Porter – are open during the 2014 election cycle. Filing for School Board ends at 12 noon on Aug. 1.

All candidates who file will be on the General Election ballot in November.
