WINTON – Joyce Hope Mathias Sexton, 84, of 203 Shaw Street, Winton, died Tuesday, September 2, 2014 in Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
Mrs. Sexton was born in Gates County on May 12, 1930 and was the daughter of the late Paul and Elizabeth Dale Mathias. A former employee of Tar Heel Bank & Trust in Winton, she retired as the Winton Town Clerk after serving in that position for over 20 years. She was a member of the former Winton Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband J. Wallace Sexton; her brother, Thomas Mathias; and two sisters, Aldeen Duke and Anne Sexton.
Surviving are her children, Denise “Dee” Sexton Smith and husband Gary of Kitty Hawk, Clifton Wallace Sexton and wife Angela of Winton, and Glenn A. Sexton of Ahoskie; her sister, Juanita Christiansen of Winton; and three grandchildren, Tori Sexton, Parker Sexton, and Blair Smith.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 5 at noon in Winton Baptist Church by the Rev. J.N. Baggett and the Rev. Joe Futrell. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church immediately following the service. A private burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, handling arrangements.
