MURFREESBORO – It’s never a good idea to run from the police.

A Murfreesboro man is behind bars, held under a $50,000 bond, after attempting to flee a traffic stop Wednesday night.

Antonio D. Brown, 22, of Pinetops Road, stands charged with three felonies – flee to elude arrest; possession of cocaine; and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was also charged with resist, delay and obstruct, which is a misdemeanor.

According to Murfreesboro Police Chief Darrell Rowe, a vehicle, which Brown was later determined to be the driver, was spotted by MPD Officer Harrison Revelle operating in a suspicious manner in the area of Carolina Street and Spring Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday. Rowe said that Revelle activated the blue light and siren on his patrol vehicle in an attempt to perform a traffic stop near Lakeview Drive.

“The vehicle, a Honda occupied by two individuals, failed to stop; turning north on Union Street and out to the (US 158) Bypass where the vehicle was traveling in excess of 90 mph,” Rowe said.

From the Bypass, the vehicle turned onto Clover Circle; made a right on Lewistown Road; then to Antler Drive in Deerfield Mobile Home Park.

“It was there that the driver stopped the vehicle and bailed out on foot,” Rowe stated. “Officer Revelle was able to overtake the suspect; ordering him to the ground at which time Officer Revelle was able to handcuff the suspect.”

At that point, Hertford County Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Helms and MPD Officer William Barmer arrived to assist.

Rowe said that during a search of the suspect, Revelle found a rock-like substance consistent with that of crack cocaine. A further search of the vehicle turned up a 9 millimeter rifle.

Rowe said the lone passenger in the vehicle remained there throughout the foot chase. That individual was not charged.

“Officer Revelle did an outstanding job,” Rowe said. “I was monitoring the (police) radio during the vehicle and foot chase. Officer Revelle remained very calm and professional throughout. I’m proud of the professionalism he demonstrated. I also need to thank Sheriff Juan Vaughan for the assistance provided by his deputy.”
