CORAPEAKE – Marvin Paul “M.P.” Askew, Jr., 86, of 266 Parker’s Fork Road, Corapeake, died Monday, March 30, 2015 in Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation-Nansemond Point, Suffolk, VA.
Mr. Askew was born in Gates County on September 14, 1928, and was the son of the late Marvin P., Sr. and Nellie Pierce Askew. A retired woodworker, he was a faithful member of Damascus Congregational Christian Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons and in many other capacities through the years. A veteran of the Korean War, he served as a PFC in the United States Army. A charter of member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he was a former member of the International Order of Odd Fellows.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Marvin Paul Askew, III.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Annie Mae “Ann” Askew; two daughters, Linda A. Edwards of Corapeake and Kitty E. Martin and husband Earl of Suffolk; two grandchildren, Jonathan Martin of Carrollton, VA and Michelle Martin of Chuckatuck, VA; and a sister, Lucy Askew of Corapeake.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 2 at 2:00 p.m. in Damascus Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner and Minister John Hilts. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Damascus Church, in care of Michelle Sawyer, 372 Sugar Run Road, Sunbury, NC 27979; or to the Gates County Rescue Squad, 16 US Hwy 158 East, Gatesville, NC 27938.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff and nurses at Nansemond Pointe Rehab Center for the special care M.P. received during his stay.
