OXFORD – A mother and daughter, both natives of the Roanoke-Chowan area and later resided in Oxford, were tragically killed in a three-vehicle crash here Monday morning.

Lou Hedspeth Rawls, 93, a native of Conway, and her 70-year-old daughter, Bobbie Rawls Wilson, who was born in Colerain, died when a tractor trailer ran a red light and impacted their vehicle at around 10:30 a.m. in this Granville County town.

WRAL.com reported that the tractor-trailer, operated by Michael L. Green, was eastbound on U.S. Highway 158, also known as Oxford Loop Road, when it ran a red light at N.C. Highway 96 and first struck a southbound vehicle, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

After colliding with the first vehicle, the tractor-trailer struck a second passenger car (driven by Wilson with her mother as a passenger) which was traveling north on N.C. 96, authorities said. The tractor-trailer pushed the second vehicle several yards down the roadway before coming to a final rest on top of it, they said.

The NCHP report noted that Rawls and her daughter died at the scene.

Rawls had lived most of her life in Conway, moving to Oxford to be close to her two daughters.

Wilson had retired as clerk to the Granville County Commissioners and Assistant to the County Manager after 31 years of service.

Green was arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and a stop light violation. He was given a $10,000 secured bond.

The driver of the first vehicle impacted by the tractor trailer suffered minor injuries.

The truck is owned by ECMD Inc., a North Wilkesboro-based building products firm.
