WOODLAND – The victim of a Dec. 27 hit and run is still in the Greenville hospital with serious injuries.

Timothy Jones, 27, of the Tunis area was found about 2:30 a.m. Dec. 27 near Woodland and transported to Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie by the Northampton County EMS. He was then transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville due to the extent of his injuries.

Nicole Daniel, his aunt, said Jones underwent surgery on a lung yesterday and that he has been on and off a ventilator the whole time he has been in the hospital.

According to North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper R. Dennis, who responded to the scene of the accident, the investigation did not find any vehicular debris on the road near where Jones had been hit.

“Anybody hit as hard as he was,” Dennis said, “would have damaged the vehicle and would have left debris of some kind.”

A Northampton County EMS official said the victim was found badly injured upon the arrival of the ambulance. That official said the most significant injuries to the victim were in his mid-section.

Dennis surmised that Jones was apparently lying down on the road before he was struck by a vehicle on a very foggy early morning.

He alleged that Jones was intoxicated at that time and may have passed out in the road.

There are reports that Jones, his mother, Kimberly Jones, 45, of Aulander and others were driving in the Woodland area on Myrtle Street, located on the northern end of town off US 258, when Timothy Jones was told to get out and walk.

Trooper Dennis said there are, so far, no witnesses to the type of vehicle that struck Jones.

He speculated that vehicle is “high off the ground” and there would have been extensive damage to the undercarriage.

Dennis said the investigation is ongoing.
