WINTON – A local teen is behind bars here in the Hertford County Jail after he was located in a wooded area in the Little California community following Tuesday morning’s alleged attempted break-in of a residence on NC 461 East.

Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan said 17-year-old Tamahjea Raekwon Williams of Pleasant Plain Road, Ahoskie, stands charged with felony breaking and entering, and misdemeanor RDO (resist, delay, obstruct). His bond was set at $80,000 secured and Williams was scheduled to make his first appearance on Wednesday in Hertford County District Court.

Sheriff Vaughan said that two others are sought in this case.

Vaughan said that Hertford County Sheriff’s Deputy Kimani Stanley was the first to arrive at the scene of the alleged break-in.

“Upon his arrival, Deputy Stanley spoke with the homeowner, who said he was visiting with his cousin, who lives across the road, when he noticed three male subjects running from behind his residence,” Vaughan stated. “He added that he watched as the three males ran across the road and towards the LTD Club.”

Deputy Stanley also interviewed an individual who was inside the victim’s home at the time of the incident.

“That person advised Deputy Stanley that he heard what sounded like glass shattering from the back side of the residence and he went to investigate the source of that noise,” Vaughan said. “When he stepped outside the residence he noted two males running in the direction of the LTD Club. He began to chase those two subjects on foot, but stopped when he saw a third male join up with the first two and he was worried that one or all of them may be armed with a weapon.”

After returning to the residence, that victim showed Deputy Stanley a shattered window at the rear of the home.

“In the meantime, (HCSO) Lt. Jesse Fennell had arrived on the scene and upon learning of three males fleeing from the residence he called the Ahoskie Police Department and requested the assistance of their K-9 officer,” Vaughan stated. “Ahoskie Officer Clifton Whitby and his dog arrived soon thereafter and the animal was deployed into the wooded area where the suspects were seen entering.

“Within just a few minutes, the dog was able to locate one male suspect in the woods, a person later identified as Tamahjea Raekwon Williams who was arrested and charged in this incident,” Vaughan added.

The Sheriff commended the work of his officers as the arrest was made approximately one hour after Deputy Stanley first arrived on the scene. He also thanked the Ahoskie Police Department for their assistance.
