WINDSOR – The Windsor Police Department is seeking information on an armed robbery that took place here early Monday afternoon.

According to Windsor Police Chief Todd Lane at approximately 1:15 p.m. Monday, a contracted maintenance worker was mowing grass at the Windsor Oaks Housing Project when a subject – described as a short black male wearing black pants and a black hoodie – approached the worker, stuck a gun into the victim’s stomach and demanded money.

The victim then surrendered an unknown amount of cash, a credit card, and another item of personal identification.

The suspect then fled on foot from the immediate area, which is located at Old US-17 South just off Waters Street across from Walker Funeral Home. He was last seen headed towards the Duck-Thru store and National Guard Armory on US-17 Bypass and County Farm Road.

Lane says as a precaution his officers locked down Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy located near the Cashie Convention Center off County Farm Road near County Club Road. At 2:45 p.m. the school returned to normal operations.

However, a suspect was never located and is believed to still be at large. Two other law enforcement agencies assisted in the search: the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office along with Officer Clifton Whitby and Rico of the Ahoskie Police Department K9 unit.

“I’d like to thank the (Bertie Co.) Sheriff’s Office and the Ahoskie PD for their assistance in this matter,” Lane said. “Their cooperation was vital.”
