MURFREESBORO – The 34th annual Hertford-Northampton 4-H Livestock Show and Sale was held at the 4-H Livestock Arena here on Wednesday, June 8.

The 4-H’ers started showing their animals to Judge Phillip Rowan, a retired agricultural agent with over 30 years experience in several counties.

The steer and heifer shows were canceled because the 4-H’ers with those entries could not make it to the event.

Each 4-H’er that did participate competed in showmanship and market or breeding class for their animal.

Beth Burchell, a livestock agent for Northampton and Halifax counties, said showmanship is based on how well the young people exhibit their animals to the judge, potential buyers, and audience. Participants are put in divisions based on their ages and experience.

Their animals are also judged in the market or breeding class on muscular development, finish, structure, size and carcass qualities, or maternal development and breeding qualities.

The Grand Champion for swine was shown by Justin Jones of Northampton County. His entry was purchased at an auction held the same evening by Producers Cotton Gin and Steven Burgess Farms.

Phillip Rowan, a retired agricultural agent with over 30 years experience in several counties, served as the judge at last week’s event where he quizzed the participants on their respective animals.
