KINSTON – Post 102’s senior American Legion baseball team topped Kinston Post 43, 3-2 in 11 innings on Saturday night, and then Ahoskie downed Farmville Post 151 on Sunday 7-6 for a weekend sweep, both on the road.

In Saturday’s contest Ahoskie opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Michael Scott walked, stole second base, and went to third on an error. Scott later crossed the dish on Jarrett Harrell’s RBI single and an early lead for Post 102 after a half-inning of baseball. Kinston would load the bases in the bottom of the inning but were unable to score any runs, so it was 1-0, Ahoskie, after the first.

From there it was a pitching duel between Ahoskie’s Nick Horvath and Kinston’s Montana Thompson. Kinston threatened after a one-out double in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn’t push a run across. Neither team was able to score for the next six-and-a-half innings.

Ahoskie picked up their second run in the top of the eighth when Matthew Weaver drew a walk and stole second. Weaver went to third on D.J. Smith’s base-hit and would score on a sacrifice fly by Scott that made it 2-0, Post 102.

Kinston finally got to Horvath in the bottom of the ninth, scoring their first run on a one-out double and the game-tying run on a six-pitch walk. Horvath was relieved by Tyler Jones with the bases loaded and two outs, but Jones gave up a deep fly ball to left field to end the threat and send the game to extra innings.

The winning run came for Ahoskie in the top of the eleventh. Weaver dropped a blooper down the right field line and legged it out for a double. He would advance to third on a wild pitch. Scott then sent a shot back up the middle through the drawn-in infield and Weaver came home on the RBI for a 3-2 Ahoskie lead.

Jones gave up a walk in the bottom of the frame, but then retired the rest of the side in order and preserves the Post 102 victory.

Horvath went eight-and-two-thirds innings giving up seven hits and striking out three. Jones went two-and-a-third innings giving up no runs or hits and is credited with the win.

Kinston outhit Ahoskie, seven-to-five. Harrell, Scott, Smith, Weaver, and Nathan Rowe accounted for the quintet of safeties for Post 102.

Ahoskie is now 7-8 and 6-6 in conference play. They’ll host Kinston in a rematch at Hertford County High baseball field on Thursday at 7 p.m.
