One arrested, one flees after traffic stop

WOODLAND – One local man is behind bars while another is on the run following a traffic stop that yielded illegal drugs here Friday.

According to Northampton Sheriff’s Lieutenant M. Deloatch Sr., in the early morning hours of July 8, Tyrell Williams, 25, of Pendleton was charged with possession of cocaine, possession with the intent to sell cocaine, maintaining a vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

The arrest of Williams was initiated when Northampton Deputy Timothy Worrell conducted a traffic stop in Woodland on NC 35 for a traffic violation. Upon walking up to the vehicle he smelled an odor of marijuana.

A passenger in the vehicle, Andre Ramsey, reportedly grabbed a black bag and fled from the scene and Northampton Deputy Kevin Byrum gave pursuit at which time Ramsey dropped the bag and continued to flee.

The driver (Williams) was detained by then deputies and later charged He was jailed on a $9,500 bond and made his initial appearance in Northampton County District Court on Monday of this week.

Arrest warrants were obtained for Ramsey for possession of cocaine, possession with the intent to sell cocaine, maintaining a vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Lt. Deloatch said the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office is still searching for Ramsey. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to call the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office at 252-534-2611 or Crime stoppers Line at 252-534-1110. The identity of callers is protected.

Northampton Sheriff Jack Smith commended the work of Deputies Worrell and Byrum for their efforts in removing the above mentioned drugs from the community.
