COLERAIN – Bertie County Sheriff John Holley has announced a drug arrest carried out by members of the county’s Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit.

According to Holley, on Friday July 15, the agents observed Alexander Williams Jr., 34, of Perrytown driving a vehicle he was not authorized to be operating.

When Detective Sergeant Matt Roebuck and Detective Martin Phelps drove behind Williams’ vehicle and attempted to stop him, the subject quickly exited the vehicle and ran. However, the pursuit was brief and futile as agents were able to catch and apprehend Williams and place him in handcuffs without incident.

A search of the area where Williams had attempted to escape resulted in a discovery of approximately 17.9 grams of crack cocaine and nearly 19 grams of marijuana, along with some $1,300 in cash.

Williams has been charged with one count of felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell and/or deliver cocaine; one count of felony possession with intent to sell and/or deliver marijuana; one felony count of maintaining a vehicle to keep/store a controlled substance; two counts of resist, delay, and obstruct an officer; and one count of driving with a revoked license.

Williams is known to be an alleged drug dealer in Bertie County based on citizen complaints and grievances from sources as a result of other narcotics investigations.

Williams’ bond was set at $42,500 and he will make his first court appearance on July 20.

“I want to thank Lt. Kenny Perry, Sergeant Travis Askew, Deputy S. Clark, Deputy D. Jernigan, Deputy J. Bond and Deputy L. Bond for their immediate response and for providing assistance all the way to the end of this investigation,” Holley said.
