GOLDSBORO – David John Overman of Goldsboro completed his life on earth on Tuesday August 9, 2016. He was a lifelong member, leader, and choir member of Providence United Methodist Church. He is reunited with his parents, Guy Stevens and Ona Elizabeth Overman, and son, William Edgar Overman.
His wife of 63 years is Minnie Davis Overman. His children are Laura Susan Overman Rudell and husband Steve, Nancy Lillian Overman Harden and husband George, and David Harrell Overman and wife Lorenda. His grandchildren are Alan Michael Rudell and wife Denise, Raymond Turner Rudell and wife Mindy, Gordon Davis Rudell, Joseph Allen Harden and wife Amanda, Elizabeth Lynn Overman, Betsy Lee Overman Roberson and husband Ryan, and Dave William Overman and wife Vennie. His great-grandchildren are Hiram Marcus Rudell, Ona Rae Rudell, Wade Ryan Roberson, Logan Lee Roberson, and Quinn Leigh Overman. His sister is Peggy Ann Overman Denning.
Mr. Overman graduated from Brogden High School and served in the United States Army as a radio operator in Germany during the Korean War. He returned home and for the rest of his life enjoyed farming in Wayne County. He was recognized for his success by being named Wayne County Farm Family of the Year and Outstanding Pork Producer of the Year by the North Carolina Pork Producers Association. He was inducted into the Wayne County Agriculture Hall of Fame. He served his community and profession as a member of the Wayne County Planning Board, The Wayne County Livestock Association, and the Wayne County Farm Bureau where he served on the Board of Directors and President. He was a leader in the Boy Scouts and he retired from the Thoroughfare Volunteer Fire Department.
There was a worship service in honor of Mr. Overman at Providence United Methodist Church, 202 Providence Church Road, on Friday, August 12, 2016. Burial immediately followed the service in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Providence United Methodist Church.
