WINDSOR – Two popular Windsor-based eateries have reopened after suffering flood damage from Hurricane Matthew.

According to information shared by Lewis Hoggard of the Windsor/Bertie Chamber of Commerce, Bunn’s BBQ was scheduled to open its doors yesterday (Wednesday), while  Little Golden Skillet was back in business earlier this week.

“King Street Grill is coming along but not open yet,” Hoggard said in an email sent Wednesday. “Spencer’s and China King have been open. Lasca’s has avoided flooding and has remained open, and the Heritage House just recently reopened after flooding there.”

He added that the Town House likewise did not get flooded and has added hours by being open Monday, Thursday and Friday night. Subway & Burger King are also food options at Windsor Square Shopping Center.

“Unfortunately, Hammerheads Oyster Bar is not going back to their location (on King Street, adjacent to Bunn’s BBQ) are for now looking to purchase a food truck and are soliciting funds on a GoFundMe account,” Hoggard said.

Hoggard also announced two upcoming events related to the recent flooding from Hurricane Matthew and Tropical Storm Julia.

This Saturday (Nov. 5) is Project Clean Up Windsor. Volunteers are urged to meet at 7:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the old IGA in Windsor from where they will disperse to begin an all-day effort to clean up areas hit hard by the back-to-back flooding.

“If you want to help, but are unable, goodies and snacks can be taken to Dan Pittman Insurance. Water and ice has been donated. Volunteers from Williamston are fixing us lunch behind Dan Pittman’s at 12 noon,” said Hoggard.

“Also, Pastor Bobby from Cashie Baptist Church has joined us and is asking for those ages 16 and over to please consider helping the Baptist men (a group currently in Windsor performing storm clean-up work). They are in need of people going under houses, and all protective wear is provided,” Hoggard noted.

He reminded those volunteers to to bring items such as heavy duty trash bags, rakes, hoes, gloves, etc.

“I’m so excited to see God’s plan fall into place that he laid on our hearts. I can’t believe this started with a few people and grew to this,” Hoggard stated.

Hoggard also said there was a meeting set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10 hosted by county and Town of Windsor officials for local businesses in the area  to have the Small Business Administration to explain all options available to them. That meeting will be held in the Bertie County Commissioners Room, located at 106 Dundee Street, Windsor.

Additionally, there will be two upcoming presentations entitled: Make Your Home Healthier – control allergies and asthma through good cleaning techniques especially after the flood and storms. They will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Bertie High School; and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at West Bertie Elementary School.
