WELDON – Painkillers, amphetamines, penicillin and prednisone were part of a New Year’s Eve seizure by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Approximately 260 pills and four packages of amphetamine were discovered following a traffic stop for a violation in the Weldon area shortly before 10:45 p.m.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall said in a statement that Sergeant S.N. Casey and Deputy M.A. Bishop were on patrol when they stopped a Toyota Camry driven by a man identified as Wallace Jones, 50, of Winton.

Hall said Casey either learned of or saw some indicators which made him suspicious and the deputies discovered 131 Tramadol pills; 48 Oxycodone pills; 20 Hydrocodone pills, 26 penicillin pills and 35 prednisone pills.

Further investigation, Hall said in the statement, led to the discovery of four additional packages wrapped in tape containing rice, paper and items which tested positive for amphetamine.

The rice, Hall said, is used for moisture control.

It was not immediately clear what the street uses for prednisone are, but Hall said past cases have shown penicillin is often sold on the black market for self-treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. He said it could not be established in this case whether the penicillin seized was going to be used for that purpose.

Jones was arrested and charged with felony possession of schedule IV; felony possession with intent to manufacture sell and deliver schedule IV; felony maintaining vehicle with a controlled substance; felony possession of schedule II; felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver schedule II; two counts of simple possession of schedule II and five counts of prescription label not present.

Jones was placed in the Halifax County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond and has a Jan. 18 court date.
