GARYSBURG – Thanks to the efforts of nearly 60 employee volunteers from Dominion Energy, Halifax Regional Medical Center, the Garysburg Fire Department and the Town of Garysburg, the goal of creating a healthier community in Garysburg is making strides toward becoming a reality.

The cohort of volunteers recently joined together to install a walking track, spread sand and gravel on the track, assemble a playground set and build benches to support the mission of the Roanoke Valley Healthy Communities Initiative.

Completion of the new 0.2-mile track was marked by a ribbon cutting, after which community members and volunteers walked an

inaugural lap to inspire future use. Additionally, a partnership with Sabra Dipping Company (based in Colonial Heights, VA) engaged the community by offering grab-and-go snack samples to learn about healthy foods during the community celebration.

Garysburg Mayor Roy Bell participated in the event and noted that the enhancements offer local children, their parents and seniors a safe place to gather and enjoy the outdoors.

“Dominion was delighted to partner with Halifax Regional Medical Center as well as the Town of Garysburg to promote healthy living within the community,” said Winnie Wiseman, key account manager for Dominion Energy’s Eastern/NC region. “People at all ages and stages of life can benefit from the walking track and the playground, as well as the benches that were provided for resting under the shade trees. This is an exciting new addition for a very close-knit community.”

The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation provided the funding for the building supplies to support the Garysburg project.
