Municipal filing begins on Friday

Filing for municipal offices (town council/commissions and mayor) opens at 12 noon on Friday (July 7) across the Roanoke-Chowan area.

Those seeking reelection or casting their hat into the ring as political challengers have until 12 noon on Friday, July 21 to file as candidates.

In all cases, those seeking municipal office must be a qualified registered voter, at least 21 years of age, and reside within the town – or in some cases within a municipal district or ward – in which they are seeking office.

The county’s Board of Elections offices (as shown below) are open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. in order for the candidates to file.

The General Election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

The following is a listing of the seats open within municipalities of the Roanoke-Chowan area:

 

Bertie County

Municipalities

Those seeking office must fill out a Notice of Candidacy form at the Bertie County Board of Elections Office, located at 210 West Watson Street in Windsor.

 

Askewville: Mayor (Bryant); and three Town Commissioners (Brantley, Pesce and Baker). All seats are for two-year terms.

Aulander: Three Town Commissioners (Poppell, Thomas and Tinkham. All seats are for four-year terms.

Colerain: Three Town Commissioners (Harrell, Hughes and Kaylor). All seats are for four-year terms.

Kelford: Mayor (Parker); and five seats on the Town Board of Commissioners (J. Bland Jr., H. Bland, Emory, Eaton, and Harrell). All seats are for two-year terms.

Lewiston-Woodville: Mayor (Vaughan); Town Council – Lewiston District (one seat – Bazemore); and Town Council – Woodville District (one seat – Jernigan). All seats are for four-year terms.

Powellsville: Mayor (Asbell); and three Town Commissioners (Peele, Watford, Hoggard). All seats are for two-year terms.

Roxobel: Mayor (Simmons); and four Town Commissioners (Baisey Sr., Bracy, Joyner Sr., and Pruden). All seats are for two-year terms.

Windsor: Mayor (Hoggard – four-year term); two Town Commissioners (Overton and Powell – both are four-year terms) and one Town Commissioner (Brown – to fill an unexpired two-year term).

NOTE: The towns of Powellsville and Windsor vote according to the nonpartisan primary and election method. If the number of candidates filing for the contest is greater than twice the number of seats to be elected, there will be a primary election held in October. The primary will trim the number of candidates down to twice the number of seats. Example: if there are seven candidates running for two seats, the top four vote-getters in the primary would advance to the General Election in November.

 

Gates County

Municipalities

Those seeking office must fill out a Notice of Candidacy form at the Gates County Board of Elections Office, located at 112 Court Street in Gatesville.

Gatesville: Mayor and three seats on the Town Council. All seats are for four-year terms.

 

Hertford County

Municipalities

Those seeking office must fill out a Notice of Candidacy form at the Hertford County Board of Elections Office, located at 700 North King Street, Winton.

 

Ahoskie: Town Council – Ward A (C. Freeman); Town Council – Ward B (Stackhouse); and Town Council – At Large (Blackburn). All seats are for four-year terms.

Cofield: Mayor (Partlow); and five Town Council seats (Archer, Lassiter, Pugh Jr., Sutton-Morales, and Wynn). All seats are for two-year terms.

Como: Mayor (Stephens Sr.); and four Town Council seats (Higbee, Kennington, Pearce, and Spruill). All seats are for two-year terms.

Harrellsville: Mayor (Thompson); and five Town Council seats (Baker, Hunnicutt, Perry, Revell, and Worrells Jr.). All seats are for two-year terms.

Murfreesboro: Mayor (Hinton); and four Town Council seats (Dennis, Theodorakis, Thomas, and Wallace). All seats are for two-year terms.

Winton: Mayor (Lewis); and five Town Council seats (Blythe, Liverman, Manley, Pierce, and Winstead).

 

Northampton County

Municipalities

Those seeking office must fill out a Notice of Candidacy form at the Northampton County Board of Elections Office, located at 9495 NC 305, Jackson (inside the JW Faison Administration Building).

 

Conway: Mayor and five Town Commissioners.

Garysburg: Mayor and five Town Commissioners.

Gaston: Mayor and two Town Commissioners.

Jackson: Three Town Commissioners.

Lasker: Mayor and three Town Commissioners.

Rich Square: Mayor and five Town Commissioners.

Seaboard: Mayor and three Town Commissioners.

Severn: Mayor and five Town Commissioners.

Woodland: Two Town Commissioners.

NOTE: There are three seats on the Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District Board of Directors during the 2017 Northampton County election cycle. Board members are elected by the citizens residing in the Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District, which includes the Town of Gaston in Northampton County.
