Sarah M. Bond

WINDSOR – Sarah Jane Morris Bond, 89, died on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Transitions Life Care Center in Raleigh, NC.
She was born on June 4, 1928 in Windsor, NC. She is the daughter of the late Ruth Smallwood Russell and stepdaughter of the late Sylvester Russell.
Sarah graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Norfolk, VA in 1945. She graduated from Hampton
University in 1949 with a BS Degree in Social Studies and a minor in Music Education. In 1965, she earned her Masters of Arts in Secondary Education from Hampton University. She continued graduate studies at Columbia University, Virginia State University and East Carolina University.
She began teaching school in Rocky Mount, Virginia in 1949. She later returned to Bertie County and worked in Bertie County Schools as a teacher, dean of student services, and chorus director until her retirement in the 80’s.
She was an active member of Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church where she served as co-chairperson of the diaconate board, choir member, pianist, Sunday school teacher, and chairman of the Health and Wellness Ministry. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
In addition to her parents, Sarah is preceded in death by her husband, Weldon R. Bond.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Bond (Renee) of Wendell, NC; four grandchildren, Jasmine, Brittany, Shania, Joshua; one great grandson, Malikhia; and a host of other family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor, NC. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
