RICH SQUARE — Customers and employees of the Rich Square Market got an unexpected surprise Saturday when a car came crashing through front window of the store.

According to Rich Square Police Lieutenant Kevin Byrd, Evelyn Lassiter Bryant, 83, of Main Street, Rich Square, was pulling up to the market at approximately 12:28 p.m. to purchase a newspaper when she apparently hit the gas instead of the brake.

The action resulted in Bryant’s newer model Hyundai Sonata crashing through the front of the store.

Byrd said the vehicle jumped the curb, went through some shrubs, before barreling through the store’s plate glass window and the small brick foundation below it. The front of the vehicle, once inside the store, then knocked over a display of grape soda pop before coming to rest.

While no exact figure could be given, damage is estimated to be more than $10,000.

Rich Square Market owner Frank Timberlake, who was not at the store when the accident occurred, said his store did shut down immediately after the accident, but re-opened two to three hours later.

“Our front doors don’t look like they did anymore, but we’re still open,” he said.

Timberlake said Bryant is a very good customer at the store and called the incident a misgiving. He said he was thankful no one was hurt.

“You can replace fixtures and windows, but you can’t replace lives,” Timberlake said.

He thanked the emergency responders who “acted professionally and promptly” as well as customers who also helped out.

“I appreciate the community’s support,” he said.

Byrd said there were no injuries and Bryant was not charged.

Along with the police department, the Rich Square Fire Department along with deputies from the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
