Volunteers harvest donated corn for Food Bank of the Albemarle

CONWAY – An eager group of volunteers from Ridgecroft School and Creeksville Baptist Church harvested an acre of sweet corn, for a total of 3678 pounds, at Lassiter Farms in Conway on July 21.

As he did one year ago, Donnie Lassiter of Lassiter Farms generously invested an acre of land to plant the sweet corn crops for the food bank. The harvested corn was taken to Food Bank of the Albemarle where it will be bagged for distribution to families facing food insecurity in Northampton, Hertford and 13 other counties located in northeast North Carolina.

Liz Reasoner, Executive Director of the Food Bank of the Albemarle, expressed gratitude for Lassiter’s donation and the volunteers.

“The food bank relies on donations such as the corn crop that Mr. Lassiter has given. His kindness and dedication to hunger relief is greatly appreciated, as well as the hard work of the volunteer groups who were essential in harvesting this corn,” Reasoner said. “It is my hope that other produce growers in the 15 county region served by the Food Bank of the Albemarle will see what a fantastic impact this has on the fight against hunger.”
