AHOSKIE – An Aulander woman was tragically killed while her husband suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle accident near here Wednesday afternoon.
Mary Jenkins, 79, died at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, where she was transported after being extricated from the wreckage.
According to the accident report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper A.S. Genao, Sidney Jenkins, 77, was operating a 2008 Toyota passenger car west on Modlin Road shortly before 6:30 p.m. The car came to a stop at the intersection of NC 11 and then proceeded into the path of a tractor-trailer that was southbound on NC 11. That truck t-boned the Toyota in the passenger side’s door, where Mrs. Jenkins was seated.
“The accident was caused by the driver of the Toyota failing to yield right-of-way to the tractor trailer that was approaching the intersection at that time,” explained NCHP First Sgt. Rodney Sawyer.
The tractor-trailer was owned by Liverman Trucking of Aulander and driven by 77-year-old James Walton of Kelford. Walton was not injured, Sawyer said, despite that vehicle veering off the roadway after impact and coming to rest in a farm field.
The husband and wife were both trapped inside their vehicle and were extricated by members of the Ahoskie Rural Fire Department. Mr. Jenkins was also transported to Vidant-RCH, and later transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
The fatality was the 11th of the year in the Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties). Six of those fatalities have occurred in Hertford County.
