AHOSKIE – Merilyn Semans Carter, 84, formerly of Ahoskie, and more recently of 804 Caspian Court, Wilmington, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Carter was born in Pittsburgh, PA on August 3, 1933, and was the daughter of the late Charles L. and Dorothy Watson Semans. Retired from the Department of Social Services in Winton, she was a member of Hickory Chapel Original Free Will Baptist Church, and had enjoyed serving as a volunteer with both Vidant Hospice and Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Augustus Carter, Sr., a sister, Dorothy O’Neal, and by a brother, Thomas Semans, III.

Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Heflin and husband Jim of Moore, OK, Annette Carter and Angela Carter, both of Wilmington; three sons, Marvin Carter, Jr. and wife Pam of Crawfordsville, IN, Randy Carter of Moyock, and Tim Carter and wife Mary of Alpharetta, GA; five grandchildren, Joshua Roche and wife Kelli, Paul Lane, Steven Carter, Virginia Heflin, and Justin Carter and wife Elisabeth; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and will be officiated by her pastor, The Rev. Jim Skipper. Friends may join the family in the funeral home the hour prior to the service on Thursday. A private burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, VA.
