AHOSKIE – Maybe Windsor Post 37’s junior American Legion team should change their mascot from the Rebels to the Boll Weevils.

They’re just looking for a home … game!

For the fourth straight time, Mother Nature altered their plans for a home opener baseball game in Windsor, this time with a flash downpour Wednesday night just minutes before first-pitch.

But all was not lost, since the contest was against neighboring Post 102 the game was moved from Bertie High’s field to Hertford County’s field in Ahoskie, the start only delayed about one hour.

Maybe Ahoskie should’ve opted for a rainout postponement.

The Rebels won 11-1, upping their overall mark to 4-0 and 3-0 in Area-One conference play.

Windsor scored in every inning of the run-rule shortened contest. They opened the scoring with Brandon Beach ripping a three-run home run over the left field fence in the top of the first inning. Ahoskie failed to answer in their half and trailed 3-0 after one complete inning of baseball.

The Rebels added another triple in the top of the second on a Cody Stalls RBI single, another RBI by Beach – this time a base hit, and a run-scoring single by Caleb Damo. Windsor led 6-0 after an inning-and-a-half.

Ahoskie scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the second on a Logan Early RBI single that made it 6-1 after two innings in the books.

Windsor’s seventh run came in the top of the third when Turner Griffin scored on a wild pitch that made it 7-1 after three.

Post 37 got another run in the top of the fourth on Damo’s second RBI of the game, this time on a groundout, and the Rebels tacked on one more in the top of the fifth on a Cameron Stevens RBI single. Windsor led it 9-1 after five innings

The last two runs of the game for Windsor came in the top of the sixth on a Griffin sacrifice fly and a Wood Trowell RBI single. Trenton White, who went the distance for the win, then kept the Braves off the board in the bottom of the inning for the 10-run Windsor win.

Post 37 had 11 hits. Beach was 3-for-4, while Trenton White had two hits and Damo, Stalls, Stevens, Trowell, Austin Scott, and Jarrett Burden had one hit apiece.

Ahoskie managed seven hits: two by Steven Futrell, while Alden Lassiter, Early, Avery Harris, Parker Bradley, and T.J. Lassiter each had one hit

White got the win on the bump for Windsor, going six innings and allowing a run on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Ahoskie used four pitchers. Early pitched the first two innings and was saddled with the loss. Ethan Hughson pitched an inning, Sam Doughtie hurled two innings, and Bradley pitched for one.

“We’re swinging the bats real good,” said Windsor coach Bobby Harmon. “Trenton pitched a great game, the best he’s pitched in a while, and we played good defense.”

Windsor is now 5-0 and 4-0 in conference after the Rebels edged Edenton Post 40 by a score of 3-1 on Thursday then hosted Wilson Post 13 on Friday, finally getting in a home game at Bertie High. They’ll host Ahoskie again next week on Wednesday June 13.

As for the Braves, they are now 4-2 overall and with this setback suffered their first loss in league play (2-1). Ahoskie will resume conference action today (Saturday) at Wake Forest Post 187 before remaining in the Capital area for a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday against the Post 67 Cary Cardinals. They are then back at home Monday to entertain Bear Grass.
