CARY – Continuing a two-day, three-game swing through the state capital region, Ahoskie Post 102’s junior American Legion baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Cary Bulls on Sunday by scores of 10-2 and 14-12.

Ahoskie won the first game by eight runs.

The Braves opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Alden Lassiter got an RBI groundout for one score and Avery Harris was hit by a pitch with the bases-loaded for another run. Ahoskie led 2-0 after the first.

Post 102 added six more runs on the top of the third. Harris, Hunter Mitchell, Tyrek Beverly, and Alden Lassiter each had run-scoring singles, while Parker Bradley had a two-RBI base hit. It was 8-0, Ahoskie, after three innings.

Both teams scored in the fourth, Ahoskie on a Beverly sacrifice fly that made 9-1 after four innings.

Ahoskie’s final run came on a Bradley RBI double before Cary scored in the bottom of the fifth for the 10-2 win.

Alden Lassiter pitched four innings for the win while Travis Williams came on out of the bullpen in the fifth to throw one inning.

Ahoskie had 13 hits as Beverly, Hobbs, Bradley, Harris and Mitchell all had two hits each. Alden Lassiter, Futrell, and Logan Early had one hit apiece.

In the second game Ahoskie rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh inning for a high-scoring 14-12 win and a sweep of the double-header series.

The Braves led off with four runs in the top of the first when Futrell and T.J. Lassiter had RBI base hits and Chase Edwards had a two-run double. Cary got one of those runs back in their half of the first, so it was 4-1, Ahoskie, after one complete inning of baseball.

Cary then got a run in the bottom of the third and three more in the bottom of the fourth to lead it 5-4 after four.

Ahoskie scored a run in the top of the fifth to tie it on an Early RBI single, but in Cary’s half of the inning, they pushed a pair of runs across and led 7-5 after five.

The Braves re-took the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring single by Beverly and a two RBI single by Futrell for an 8-7 advantage, but Cary picked up five more runs in their half of the frame and was up 12-8 after six innings.

But then Ahoskie came through to make it a sweep. In the top of the seventh, Beverly had a two-run double, Alden Lassiter then had an RBI single to pull Post 102 within a run at 12-11. Futrell then hit a go-ahead two-run triple that turned out to be the game-winner and he would then score the final run of the game on an error to add a little insurance. The Braves bullpen then came on to close out the game with a scoreless half-inning and preserve the victory.

Ahoskie used five pitchers as T.J. Lassiter got the win in relief for Post 102. Sam Doughtie, Derious Boone, Bradley, and Harris also pitched.

Ahoskie had 14 hits: three by Futrell and two apiece by Hobbs and Beverly. Alden Lassiter, T.J. Lassiter, Early, Bradley, Edwards, Mitchell, and Harris all had one hit each.

“We had to come back and win that second game,” said Post 102 coach David Ellis. “Alden pitched great in the first game; this was a nice double-header sweep.”

Ahoskie is now 7-2 after picking up the two non-conference wins.
