AHOSKIE – A shade over one month and two hurricanes later, the Ahoskie Fall Fling is a “go” for this Saturday (Oct. 20).
The event was originally scheduled for Sept. 15. It was postponed until a later date due to Hurricane Florence.
“We looked at a couple of other weekends, but they conflicted with other events here in our local area,” said Amy Braswell, Executive Vice President of the Ahoskie Chamber of Commerce, one of the organizations in charge of putting the Fall Fling together. “And along the way we had another hurricane (Michael).”
Braswell is keeping her fingers crossed that the weather will cooperate on Oct. 20.
“We’ve seen more fall-like weather after the last hurricane passed by; we’re hopeful of that type of cooler weather will prevail this weekend,” she stressed.
“Fall Fling is all about bringing people together for a good time in our downtown business district. It’s not being used as a fundraiser, but rather as a way to promote our downtown area,” Braswell said.
Saturday’s agenda begins at 9 a.m. with the Vidant 5K Run. The start/finish line is at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, located on Church Street. Those who had pre-registered for this event back on its original date (Sept. 15) do not have to register again.
The 5K/3.1 mile course is within the Ahoskie town limits.
Registration is $25 per participant. To register, call 252-209-3090, stop by Ahoskie’s Vidant Wellness Center located at 117 Hertford County High Road, or sign-up online at www.VidantWellnessCenter.com/5k.
Race day registration will be available from 7:45-8:45 a.m. at the check in table near the starting line at the church. Cash transactions only will be available at that time.
Parking for the race participants is recommended at the corner of West Street and Church Street in the parking lots near St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
Prizes will be awarded to overall Male & Female winner and 1st place winner in each age group. Overall winners will receive a 3-month membership certificate to Vidant Wellness Center. Age group winners will receive a one-month membership certificate to the Vidant Wellness Center. Membership certificates are non-transferable.
At around 11 a.m., the portion of Main Street at and near the railroad crossing will be closed off to vehicular traffic. Braswell said a stage will be set up on the corner of Main and Railroad streets. Vendors – to include the Waffle Waffle Food Truck and a home-cooked pork barbecue site manned by Thomas Williams – will be located in this area. Sweet potato and pumpkin treats will also be available.
Quick Trigger Brewing Company (located at Mug Shotz Restaurant at 118 West Main Street) will offer a beer garden and tours of its brewery throughout the afternoon.
Live bands will perform on the stage later Saturday afternoon. The portion of Main Street in front of the stage will serve as a dance floor. Patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Scheduled to perform are Side Trac from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and Breadwine & Blooze from 6-8 p.m.
