BRISTOL, Conn. – Bertie County has its first WNBA selection.
Monday afternoon, Kelford’s Jessica Breland was selected as the first pick in the second round of the WNBA draft by the Minnesota Lynx. Later in the draft process, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill senior and former Bertie High School standout was traded to the New York Liberty.
Breland averaged 16.2 points per game in 2010-11 for the Tarheels after missing the entire 2009-10 season due to being treated for Hodgkins Lymphoma. She was an inspiration to many for her ability to fight the disease and return to the playing court.
During her senior season, Breland was Honorable Mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference and was chosen to the All-Tournament Team. She was a two-time All-Roanoke-Chowan Player of the Year during her time at Bertie High School.
More information on Breland’s selection will be available in Thursday’s edition of the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald.
