ROANOKE RAPIDS – Police here are investigating the shooting death of a 27-year-old Como man that occurred in the area of Creekside Court in the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 14.
Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Bobby Martin said investigators believe Chris Monger was shot while in his vehicle. After he was shot he drove the vehicle a short distance to the intersection of Hinson Street and the Creekside Court apartment complex.
Martin said when officers arrived they immediately called for emergency medical services.
Monger was declared deceased at the hospital.
The police chief said in a statement officers received the call shortly before 2:30 a.m.
Monger was struck from a round fired into his upper torso, Martin said in the statement.
He declined to say how many shots were fired but did confirm the weapon appears to be a handgun.
Monger had ties to the Roanoke Rapids area, Martin said. Detectives continue to investigate a possible motive in the case.
The victim’s family has been notified.
“They are in our thoughts and prayers,” Martin said. “Anytime you lose a child it’s never easy. We hope someone in the public knows something and will share information. It really helps us.”
Martin said investigators are actively working the case.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
