Helen Alston White

COLERAIN – Helen Alston White, 90 of Colerain, died Saturday, April 16, 2011.
She was born in Bertie County on March 12, 1921 to the late Thomas Edward and Johnnie Alston. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Ralph White Jr.; and a son, Ernest Ralph White III; and was joined in death by her daughter, Barbara White Lafferty, and son-in-law, Roy Lafferty, as a result of a tornado. A 90th birthday/family reunion was celebrated on March 12, 2011.
She was a caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, she loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.
A member of Colerain Baptist Church, Helen was active in her Sunday School class as well as her WMU and also a member of Bertie County Homemaker Club. She and her husband traveled extensively with the Lions Club.
Helen loved the activities and friends at the Colerain Senior Center, where she participated every day. She often volunteered to serve Meals on Wheels at the Senior Center, and worked as a nurse’s aide at Roanoke Chowan Hospital for several years. Her volunteer work included 20 plus years with Hospice, working with patients. In recent years her time was spent sewing gowns, teddy bears, hats, etc., for patients. She loved her crafts and loved sharing them with her family and friends. Her quilts, baskets and dishcloths will be forever cherished.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Colerain Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Roberts, the Rev. Nathan Parrish, and the Rev. Avery Varnadore officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011 at Walker Funeral Home in Windsor. Donations may be made to Colerain Baptist Church, 202 North Main Street, Colerain, NC 27924.
She is survived by her two daughters, Keith White Travis (husband Bob), and Lisa White Barfield (husband Randy); five grandchildren, Jonathan White (wife Christy), Robert M. Travis (friend April), Norman Travis (wife Leighann) Madison Barfield and Morgan Barfield; and five great grandchildren, Tanner Woollen, Logan White, Alston White, Kamryn Travis, Jace Travis.
