Ridgecroft softball off to a fast start

Four games into their 2020 season, the Lady Rams of Ridgecroft School are off to a fast start as they currently have a 3-1 overall record.

In their most recent outing, the Lady Rams used a four-run outburst in the bottom of the third inning to build a 6-1 lead en route to an 8-4 win over Hobgood Academy on March 5.

Mandy Spence, Brooke Rose, and Carlie Kennington each drove in runs during the inning.

Ridgcroft finished the game with seven hits, led by two each from Spence and Courtney Taylor. Kennington had two RBI’s.

Spence was credited with the pitching win. She surrendered four runs on three hits over six innings, striking out 14.

M. Harris took the loss for Hobgood. She went five innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits and struckout four.

Ridgecroft opened the 2020 season on Feb. 28 in Wilson vs. Community Christian School. There, Spence and Kennington combined to pitch a one-hit shutout as the Lady Rams blanked their hosts, 18-0.

Spence got the win on the mound. She worked two innings, allowing only one hit while fanning six. Kennington hurled the next two innings and set down six straight batters to preserve the shutout.

Ridgecroft collected 18 hits, led by three each from Kennington, Clayson Spence and Mandy Spence. Camryn Joyner, Brooke Rose, and Mandy Spence each drive home three runs.

Leading 6-0 after two innings of play, the Lady Rams doubled their lead to 12-0 by scoring six times in the top of the third. That outburst was sparked by run-scoring hits by Mandy Spence, Camryn Joyner, and Brooke Rose and a triple by Courtney Taylor.

Ridgecroft was also sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Taylor had the most chances in the field with eight.

Ridgecroft’s bats were loud again on March 2 where the Lady Rams had 10 hits in a 12-0 win over Terra Ceia Christian School.

Leading 4-0, the Lady Rams broke the game open by plating six runs in the bottom of the second inning. There, Mandy Spence, Skylar Brown, Kennington, Taylor, and Clayson Spence powered the big inning with run-scoring hits.

Kennington and Rose led the offense with two hits each.

Mandy Spence was in the pitcher’s circle. She surrendered no runs on one hit over four innings of work, striking out nine and walking one.
