AHOSKIE – The operator of a moped, in an attempt to elude a pursing Ahoskie Police officer, wound up crashing into a second APD vehicle here in the early morning hours of April 6.

Madison Evans, age 26, of West South Street, Ahoskie, was issued several citations, including violating North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s “Stay at Home” executive order issued last week in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19.

According to APD Lt. Jeremy Roberts, APD Major Jimmy Asbell was on patrol at 5:40 a.m. when he noted two mopeds on the roadway, neither with operating lights. Upon seeing the police vehicle, the moped drivers took off in different directions.

Asbell followed one, noting the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. Upon reaching the intersection of Myers Street and Pembroke Avenue, Asbell activated the blue lights on his vehicle, but the moped operator, later determined to be Evans, fled.

APD Officer Ryan Deans was responding in the area of Curtis and Main streets to assist Asbell. At that point, the driver of the moped attempted to steer around Deans’ oncoming police car, but crashed into it instead. The police car sustained minor damage.

Evans suffered injuries in the crash and taken Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Following discharge, he was issued traffic citations for careless and reckless, and failing to stop at a stop sign, as well as violating the Governor’s executive order.
