MURFREESBORO – The search for a missing autistic 13-year-old has successfully ended.

Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes said the child was found at around 9:30 p.m. approximately two miles from where he left his residence on Benthall Bridge Road.

“He is safe and is being checked out by Hertford County EMS,” Hayes said at around 9:50 p.m.

Hayes earlier reported that the child left his residence around 2:30 p.m. following an apparent disagreement with a family member.

The HCSO set up a Command Post on Benthall Bridge Road. The Sheriff’s Office, Murfreesboro and Ahoskie Police, Murfreesboro Fire Department, Hertford County Emergency Management, Hertford County Rescue, and Gates County Search and Rescue were actively involved in the search, as were bloodhounds from the North Carolina Department of Corrections. A helicopter from the NC Highway Patrol was also used.
