We’re not promised tomorrow.

Those who choose a career in law enforcement know that better than most. Every time they report to work, they know they are risking their lives. It’s not something they often talk about, but all of them know it.

They choose to put themselves in harms way for the rest of us because they are a special group of men and women.

In the past decade, we’ve lost two law enforcement officers too young.

Thomas Lewis, an officer with the Roanoke-Chowan Narcotics Task Force was killed in 2004. He was a person who cared about his job and who worked diligently for the citizens of the Roanoke-Chowan. Despite the years since his passing, he is still remembered, not only for his work, but for the person he was.

Tragedy struck again on Easter Sunday when Bertie County Sheriff’s Corporal Kenny Cobb lost his life in a boating accident on the Cashie River. It was sad and shocking.

Kenny Cobb was a good officer who worked for the citizens of the county and who gave them his all. We had many dealings with Corporal Cobb in his work and always found him prepared, professional and diligent. The officer he was may only have been surpassed by the man he was.

We are always grateful for those who serve and protect us. We appreciate their work and their effort.

We join Bertie County Sheriff John Holley, Chief Deputy Greg Atkins and the rest of the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office in paying tribute to Corporal Cobb. We join the citizens of the county in mourning his loss.

We are grateful for the opportunity to have worked with him and offer our condolences to the family of this fine man. May God be with you in this terrible time.
