Hertford County sweeps conference outing at Currituck

BARCO – Hertford County High School swept Currituck County on the road here Feb. 11 in Northeastern Coastal Conference varsity basketball action.

In the girls game, the Lady Bears built a 21-12 halftime lead en route to a 57-33 win.

Desiree Askew scored 18 points to lead the HCHS ladies. Kenae Edwards also struck for double figures with 10 points.

Rounding out the Lady Bears scoring were Tamia Britt (9), Qua’Dajah Ruffin (8), Daysha Holloman (5), Ashley Jenkins (3), Adarielle Townsell 2), and Jaliyah Mitchell (2).

The Lady Bears improved to 4-1 overall (2-1 in conference play) with the win.

Hertford County completed the sweep with 61-53 win in the boys game.

The Bears led by 10 (33-23) at halftime and were able to hold off the Knights in the second half.

Hertford County placed four in double digits led by 16 points from Daylan Askew. Israel Powell added 13 points; Keondre Rodgers chipped in 12 points, and Quadre Douglas tallied 10 points.

Completing the HCHS scoring were Keveon Rodgers (3), William Valentine (3), Ashton Lassiter (2), and Demari Guess (2).

One day later (Friday, Feb. 12), the HCHS varsity boys raced out to a 27-4 lead after the opening period of play and went on to rout Pasquotank County, 71-25, at home.

Askew led the Bears with 14 points. Quinton Wright added nine points while Keondre Rodgers and Keveon Rodgers each contributed eight points to the victory.

Rounding out the HCHS scoring were Guess (7), Lassiter (6), Powell (6), Valentine (6), Antoine Lawrence (3), Douglas (2), and Cameron Jenkins (2).

The Bears improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play with the two wins.
