Although the local death toll from COVID-19 has remained unchanged over the past several weeks, regional health officials are still saying it’s too early to let our guard down.

The number of active cases locally increased slightly last week: 18 in Northampton County, nine in Hertford County, six in Bertie, and three in Gates.

“We have seen a recent increase in the number of active COVID-19 cases across the region and as schools prepare to return to the classroom, now is the time to get your vaccine,” said R. Battle Betts, Jr., Health Director for Albemarle Regional Health Services (ARHS).

“We know the vaccine has been proven safe and effective,” Betts added. “People who are unvaccinated are at risk for infection by the more contagious Delta variant. In order to keep active cases low call your local health department for a vaccine appointment.”

Betts said it is also highly recommended for individuals who have not gotten their shot to wear a mask indoors at all times when in public spaces.

ARHS is continuing to accept vaccine appointments (ages 12-and-up) for first and second dose Moderna and Pfizer, along with Johnson and Johnson, at each of its local health departments. Those in the R-C area can call the Gates County Health Dept. (252-357-1380), the Bertie County Health Dept. (252-794-5322), or the Hertford County Health Dept. (252-862-4054). Those offices can also be contacted for COVID testing.

Northampton County residents can call 252-534-5841 to schedule an appointment for either a COVID-19 vaccine or test.
