JACKSON – Other than seeing a name beneath a photograph, the small army of volunteers that came to Northampton County earlier this week from all across the state were not familiar with Daniel Moses or his life’s story.

But that didn’t stop them from joining an effort to search for a person they didn’t know.

“We are so appreciative of the turnout of our brothers and sisters in law enforcement as well as those search teams who volunteered their time and effort to join the search for Mr. Moses,” said Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith.

As reported in Wednesday’s (Aug. 4) edition of the News-Herald, the search was conducted along Cumbo Road, near where Moses lived in the Rehoboth community, located between Rich Square and Jackson. Moses was last seen on June 16, 2011. He was 61-years-old at that time.

The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office and the county’s Emergency Management office coordinated Monday’s search. Other than those two, other agencies involved in the event were the North Carolina SBI, Jackson Police Department, Conway Police Department, Woodland Police Department, Garysburg Police Department, Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Enfield Police Department, Roanoke Rapids Police Department, North Carolina Emergency Management, Halifax County Emergency Management, Woodland Fire Department, Garysburg Fire Department, Shallotte (Brunswick County) Fire Department, Northampton County EMS, Eastside EMS, Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad, Northampton County CERT, Brunswick SAR (Search & Rescue), REDS K-9, Pineland SAR, Central Carolina SAR, North Carolina Medical Examiners Office, and the East Carolina University Department of Forensic Pathology.

“As you can clearly see, that’s a lot of manpower,” Sheriff Smith stressed. “Many of these individuals are highly skilled in search and rescue techniques. When you are a small department like ours, it’s nice to have those valuable resources a phone call away.

“Again, on behalf of the Northampton Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of this county, I thank each and every one of those individuals that joined us on Monday for the search,” Smith added. “Although we were not able to find any new clues, this remains an active case and we will leave no stone unturned until we can find Mr. Moses and help give his family some closure.”
