AHOSKIE – Is the next Ronald Acuña Jr. or Jennie Finch waiting in the wings right here in Ahoskie?

Those two superstars of professional baseball and softball undoubtedly got their careers started in a youth league in their respective hometown. All they had to do back then was sign-up and play.

That’s all it takes with the Ahoskie Youth Baseball and Softball programs. Registration is now open for several age divisions as follows:

T-ball (ages 5 and 6) for boys and girls;

8U baseball and softball;

10U baseball and softball;

12U baseball and softball; and

15U baseball and softball.

The registration fee is $25 for T-ball. For all other leagues, the fee is $35 for Ahoskie in-town residents or $45 for those living outside the town’s corporate limits.

Registration forms are available at the Ahoskie Town Hall during normal business hours on weekdays or by visiting the town’s website at www.ahoskienc.gov. Registration ends March 11.

The season will tentatively open on April 25. All games will be played at the Ahoskie Creek Recreational Complex.

Last month, the Town of Ahoskie reorganized the leadership of the recreational programs. Ahoskie Fire Chief Mike Bradley will oversee the youth baseball/softball leagues.

“We’re really looking forward to getting the season underway and build on the past success of our baseball and softball programs,” Bradley said. “We have a first-class facility there at the Ahoskie Creek ballpark and we are eager for our young boys and girls to learn and grow their skills as ballplayers.”

Bradley formed a committee to assist him in the operation of the youth leagues. They are Chuck Munford, Andy Woodard, Chris Burby, Tammy Piland, and Josh Adams.

The youth leagues also have a presence on Facebook (Ahoskie Youth Baseball and Softball League).

Volunteer coaches and team sponsors are needed. Contact Bradley at 252-332-3322 to learn more.
