WINTON – Funds are available to qualified organizations that assist those in need of food and shelter in Hertford County.

The county’s Emergency Food and Shelter Board has been awarded over $30,000, to include $24,725 from the American Rescue Plan.

At a recent meeting of the Hertford County Board of Commissioners, Deidre Evans made a short presentation about the funds and the process of how they are distributed annually.

She said the Food and Shelter Board implements a competitive grant process for those combined funds. Applications are sought from non-profit, faith-based, and governmental agencies/organizations. The board meets to review those applications from which the agencies are selected to receive the funds.

Evans added that the funding could also be used to provide food, shelter, and supportive services that qualify within the guidelines of the program.

“In those cases, the funds can be used for emergency housing when a storm comes through or there is a [residential] fire,” Evans noted. “The funding can also go to food pantries.”

Evans further explained that those submitting funding applications are required to operate within Hertford County and maintain a checking account in the name of the agency/organization.

In addition to Evans, other members of the Hertford County Emergency Food and Shelter Board are Pastor Daniel Smith Sr. of the Ahoskie Christian Center, David Barnes of the Ahoskie Food Pantry, Felicia Gaston of Hertford County E-911 Communications, Frank Jones of the Salvation Army, Howard Taylor of the Beth Emet Messianic Temple, Father Robert Schmid of St. Charles Catholic Church, Joseph Hall Jr. of the Meherrin Indian Tribe, and Marion Faison of Hertford County DSS.
