Early voting opens this week

This year’s general election will be held on Nov. 8, but voters have a chance to fill in their ballots beforehand when One-Stop early voting starts this week.
The statewide early voting period runs from Thursday, Oct. 20 through Saturday, Nov. 5. Times, dates, and locations, however, vary from county to county.
Bertie County voters can choose between two locations to cast their vote early: the county Board of Elections office (210 W. Watson Street, Windsor) and Powellsville Town Hall (106 E. Main Street, Powellsville). Both sites will be open each weekday during the early voting period from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. No sites will be open during the weekend except for Saturday, Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Gates County will have one early voting location at the Gates County Community Center, located at 130 US 158 West, Gatesville. The site will be open each weekday from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. during the early voting period. Voters can also cast their ballots on three Saturdays, Oct. 22, Oct, 29, and Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hertford County will also offer only one location for early voting. Citizens can stop by the county’s Board of Elections office (418 Everett Street, Suite A, Ahoskie) for One-Stop early voting. The site will be open each weekday during the early voting period from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. They will not be open during the weekend except for Saturday, Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Northampton County voters will have three early voting sites to choose from: the Northampton County Cultural and Wellness Center (9536 NC Hwy 305, Jackson), Cool Spring Community Center (101 Cherry Street, Gaston), and Creecy Gymnasium (210 Roberts Road, Rich Square).
All sites will be open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on weekdays during the early voting period. No sites will be open during the weekend except for Saturday, Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A number of federal, state, and local races will be on the ballot this year.
All registered voters in the local Roanoke-Chowan area will be able to cast ballots for US Senate and US House of Representatives (District 1). US Senate candidates include Matthew Hoh (Green Party), Cheri Beasley (Democrat), Shannon W. Bray (Libertarian), and Ted Budd (Republican). US House candidates are Don Davis (Democrat) and Sandy Smith (Republican.)
Statewide races that voters in all four counties will cast their ballots for include several court seats. Those races are as follows:
NC Supreme Court Associate Justice – Seat 3: Richard Dietz (Republican) and Lucy Inman (Democrat)
NC Supreme Court Associate Justice – Seat 5: Sam J. Ervin IV (Democrat) and Trey Allen (Republican)
NC Court of Appeals Judge – Seat 8: Julee Tate Flood (Republican) and Carolyn Jennings Thompson (Democrat)
NC Court of Appeals Judge – Seat 9: Brad A. Salmon (Democrat) and Donna Stroud (Republican)
NC Court of Appeals Judge – Seat 10: John M. Tyson (Republican) and Gale Murray Adams (Democrat)
NC Court of Appeals Judge – Seat 11: Darren Jackson (Democrat) and Michael J. Stading (Republican)
All four counties in the Roanoke Chowan area are also included in NC State Senate District 3. The two candidates in that race are Bobby Hanig (Republican) and Valerie Jordan (Democrat).

If voters choose not to cast their ballot during the early voting period, they can do so on Election Day from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at their assigned polling place.
