MURFREESBORO – Chowan University hosted Senior Day here Saturday where both its soccer teams defeated King University.

The women’s team had goals by Lillian DeLucca, Destiny Makanjuola and Natasha Bailey for a 3-1 win.

Cristina Flores collected two assists while DeLucca added one assist.

Kirsten Peterson and Gracie Ross posted three saves each.

Chowan would get on the board in the 11^th minute of the contest as Makanjuola headed home the corner kick from Flores.

Chowan continued to push shots towards goal as Regan Jackson had two shots saved and Makanjuola had one saved.

Peterson posted one save in the opening half in the 43′ as the Hawks went into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.

King posted two shots on frame in the early portion of the second half that were turned away by Peterson. Bailey had a shot saved in the 68′.

The Tornado found the equalizer in the 70′ off a free kick to even the match at 1-all.

The score would not stay level long as Bailey finished off the corner kick by DeLucca in the 74′ to lead 2-1. DeLucca would find the back of the net in the 78′ off the assist by Flores on a free kick to put the Hawks up 3-1.

Chowan (5-9-2 overall and 5-5-2 in league play) used the win to secure the eighth seed in the Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Championship. The Hawks will travel to take on Belmont Abbey, the fifth seed, in the opening round on Wednesday, Oct. 26. First touch is slated for 7 pm.

In Saturday’s men’s game, Chowan improved to 6-6-4 overall and 6-2-3 in conference play with a 4-1 victory.

Tren Drexhage and James Randall collected one goal and one assist each. Leke Ademola and Marlone Nandjeu posted a goal, while Harri Lovett and Kai Rymes collected an assist.

Charlie Farrar picked up the win in goal with three saves.

Chowan would strike early as Drexhage finished off the attack as Lovett sent a ball towards the end line for Randall to slide across the face of the goal for the opening tally in the ninth minute.

Ademola posted two shots on frame in the 31′ but was turned away. Randall would find the back of the net in the 33′ as Drexhage returned the favor to Randall inside the 18-yard box for the 2-0 lead.

Bradley Binns nearly made it 3-0 as his shot attempt in the 43′ was cleared off the line.

The Hawks added to their lead in the 52′ as Ausar Omwenga played a ball over the top and was misplayed by the King defense allowing Ademola to tap into the wide-open net for the 3-0 lead.

The Tennessee visitors broke up the shutout in the 79′ as a King attacker would find the back of the net into the far post, 3-1.

Chowan finished off the scoring in the 81′ as Rymes sent in a free kick towards goal allowing Nandjeu the back heel flick into the near post for the 4-1 victory.

Chowan secures its spot in the Conference Carolinas Men’s Soccer Championship. With regular season matches still to be played, the Hawks’ destination in the league standings has yet to be determined.
