MURFREESBORO – The Chowan women’s basketball team held Erskine to single-digits in all four quarters, including a scoreless frame, in a 68-21 thumping in Conference Carolinas action here Wednesday afternoon.
Chowan held Erskine to the second lowest point total in program history (21). It is the lowest opponent scoring outing since November of 2001 when the then Braves held Bennett to 20 total points. The defense held Erskine scoreless in the second quarter.
Yasmine Brown led the Hawks with a career-high 17 points. Brown added four assists and four steals. Sydney Roberts produced a career-high 10 points off the bench. Destiny Robinson and Demetria Bland posted eight points each to lead the starting group.
While the end result was lopsided, Erskine did hold a 6-5 in the early stages of the first quarter. However, the Hawks would then score the next 25 points leading into halftime. Jayah King-Johnson started the run with a free throw followed by a jumper by Kashara Simpson. Brown produced the three-point play to lead 11-6 at the end of the opening frame.
Chowan would extend their lead in the second quarter as the defense forced Erskine to go 0-10 from the floor and were held without a point.
Aniah Patterson continued Chowan’s offensive surge with a three-pointer followed by a jumper by Robinson and a triple by Brown. Robinson collected a pair from the stripe before King-Johnson notched a jumper and Bland connected from deep.
Bland ended the half with five more points to lead 31-6 at the intermission.
That lead would swell to 43-9 in the third quarter after Brown’s old-fashioned three-point play and a basket by Imani Hickman off an offensive rebound highlighted another surge by the Hawks. Chowan led 49-14 at the end of the period.
Roberts opened the fourth quarter with two baskets for the Hawks along with a jumper by Brittany Wilcox to push the lead to 55-14. King-Johnson picked up a pair from the stripe before Brown added the next six points.
Roberts finished off the scoring with four points in the rout.
Chowan (7-2 overall and 4-1 in league play) hits the road to take on Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday, Dec. 17. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm in Franklin Springs, GA.
