Goldsboro man arrested for stealing Bertie school bus

AULANDER – A man with a residential address in Goldsboro was arrested here Friday (Jan. 6) after he allegedly stole a school bus, wrecked it, and then fled the scene.
Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin identified the man as 22-year-old Dameon Green, who stands charged with felony motor vehicle theft. Green was processed and confined into the Bertie/Martin Regional Jail under a $10,000 secured bond pending a court appearance.
Ruffin said the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office received a call shortly before 9:30 p.m. in reference to an accident on NC Highway 305 in Aulander involving a school bus. Sheriff’s deputies Keith Padgette, Michael Lawrence, and Michael B. Conwell arrived on scene and found the school bus was wrecked and the driver had fled the scene.
During the investigation, the deputies confirmed that the bus was stolen from the Aulander Elementary School.
Ruffin confirmed that there were no children on the bus and that Green is not employed by Bertie Public Schools.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigated the accident.
