MURFREESBORO – Officers from the Murfreesboro Police Department are continuing their investigation after a drive-by shooting occurred in town on Jan. 17.

Chief David Griffith told the News Herald that the incident happened around 2 p.m.

“A car entered into Jay Trail and fired multiple rounds at a house on Jay Trail, and then sped off on Spring Avenue heading out of town,” he reported. “Multiple rounds struck the house.”

He said the house was occupied at the time, but no one was injured.

“Multiple casings were retrieved by investigators,” Griffith added.

He also said they were working collaboratively with the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office and Ahoskie Police Department to determine if the incident had any connection to other recent shootings in the county.

“We’re all a team. When they [criminals] flee the scene, they’re going to other jurisdictions. So we all have a vested interest in taking these bad guys to jail,” Griffith explained.

The department is utilizing camera footage to try to determine more details about the car that was used during the shooting. Griffith said they believe it’s a Honda Accord, but do not have more details than that as of Thursday morning. He urged citizens to reach out to the department if they had any information, and noted that callers can remain anonymous. The public can contact the Murfreesboro Police Department at 252-398-4151.

“If you hear gunshots, call us. If you see something that doesn’t look right, give the police department a call,” Griffith said. “It’s better for us to be proactive than reactive.”

“Our residents deserve to feel safe and secure in their homes. We’re taking these calls very seriously,” he concluded.
