Chowan earns season sweep of Trojans

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan women’s basketball team picked up the season sweep against their rivals, Mount Olive, in Conference Carolinas action here Wednesday evening with a 75-64 victory.
Destiny Robinson collected her 10th double-double of the season with a team-high 23 points and 14 rebounds. Aniah Patterson, Keibra Hopkins, and Yasmine Brown posted 11 points each.
The Hawks went 20-of-28 from the charity stripe, including 16-of-22 in the second half.
After leading 18-12 at the end of the first quarter, Chowan withstood a rally by Mt. Olive who got to within 22-20 early in the second period. The Hawks answered baskets from Imani Hickman, Hopkins, Tyaysia Sharpe, and Patterson. Jayah King-Johnson went 1-of-2 from the line to end the half where the Hawks held a 31-23 advantage.
That lead grew to 11 points (43-32) early in the third period where Robinson had a layup followed by a three-pointer by Brown. Hickman picked up a pair from the stripe. Demetria Bland connected from the paint and Brown hit another.
Chowan would pick up points at the line as King-Johnson ended the quarter with a three-point play to lead 55-42.
Mt. Olive never drew closer than 10 points in the fourth quarter.
Chowan (14-8 overall; 10-6 in conference play) hosts nationally-ranked Belmont Abbey in a league contest on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm.
