MURFREESBORO – The Murfreesboro African American History Coalition is requesting community input. If you had a family member or remember anyone who played baseball in Hertford County or the surrounding areas on the Ahoskie Warhawks, Como Eagles, Chowan Bees, Mboro Red Sox, Tigers, or Riverside Giants, the History Coalition wants to hear from you!
The History Coalition also invites the community to a celebration of African American baseball from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Murfree Center, located on Broad Street in Murfreesboro. There, History Coalition members will be collecting oral history information to use for their next historic marker to honor African American baseball in the local community.
Dr. Dudley Flood, who played on the Chowan Bees and Como Eagles, will be in attendance. A short history slide show will be shown. Baseball-related artwork will be on display by Riverview Elementary School students. Members of the Murfreesboro Raiders Youth Sports teams will be present.
Brandon Vaughan is in charge of the musical selections. Refreshments will be served.
This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome! The Murfreesboro African American History Coalition was founded in 2018 to collect, document, and celebrate the contributions of African Americans in Murfreesboro and the surrounding areas.
