MURFREESBORO – Using a pair of homers from Rowan Hudson, Chowan’s baseball team picked up a split in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader against nationally-ranked Mount Olive here Saturday.

Hudson paced the attack in the game one win (12-9) with three hits, including a pair of three-run home runs. Warren Bailey went 3-5 at the plate with three walks. Tyler West and Ty Johnson picked up three hits each.

Angel Diaz picked up the win in relief of game one.

Hudson would put the Hawks on the board in the bottom of the second in the opening game as he smacked a three-run homer, plating Warren Bailey and Tyler West, both who had reached on singles.

Mount Olive would rally in the third inning plating four runs off four hits to take a 4-3 lead. UMO pushed their lead to 6-3 in the fourth with a pair of runs off two hits and error.

Chowan would chip away in the bottom of the seventh as Carrington Williams sparked a rally with a one-out single up the middle. Bailey drew a walk before a double steal attempt and an error allowed a run to score. West then doubled home Bailey to cut the deficit to 6-5.

The Hawks would take the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning as Caleb Karie reached on an error and Christian Bartholomew drew a walk. Geomar Santana was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A passed ball allowed a run to score before Bailey drew a walk as another run scored on a wild pitch. West drew a walk to load the bases before an infield single and an error plated two more runs. Hudson put the Hawks on top 12-6 with another three-run home run.

The Trojans tried to rally in the ninth, scoring three runs off five hits before a fly out ended the contest.

In game two, Chowan scored their only run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning as Santana singled and stole second. Bailey hit a single up the middle to put the Hawks on the board 1-0.

Mount Olive plated three in the fourth and a run in the fifth to lead 4-1. The Trojans used two errors in the sixth to push their lead to 7-1. A home run in the seventh extended the lead to 9-1.

The two conference rivals met again on Sunday where the Trojans prevailed, 13-7.

Santana went 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a double. Ty Johnson collected two hits.

Bradley Wilbourne went 5.0 innings on the mound, allowing two unearned runs in a no decision.

Trailing 2-0, Chowan tied the game in the bottom of the inning. There, Bartholomew hit a single up the middle and stole second. Santana singled to right before a wild pitch scored Bartholomew. A fielder’s choice and an error in the inning allowed the second run to score to even the contest at 2-all.

Santana opened up the third inning with a double to right center. An error on a ground ball allowed Santana to score. West slapped a triple to right center to plate a run before West scored on Jackson Dunlap’s single to right, extending Chowan’s lead to 5-2.

Bartholomew and Williams drew a walk to lead off the sixth inning. A throwing error on a ground ball allowed the Hawks to extend their lead to 6-2.

UMO cut the deficit to 6-4 in the seventh with a home run and an error. The Trojans took the lead in the eighth plating five runs off four hits to lead 9-6.

Mount Olive tacked on four runs in the ninth off two hits and an error to push the lead to 13-6.

Karie hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the final run of the contest.

Chowan has nearly two weeks off before heading to Due West, SC to take on Erskine in a Conference Carolinas series on March 24-25.
