MURFREESBORO – The Murfreesboro Historical Association will host over 400 local students and their teachers on March 22-23 for tours of the town’s historic district.

This will mark the return of the popular event since 2019. Tours were not conducted in 2020, 2021 or 2022 due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

Students who visit Murfreesboro’s Historic District will experience a “day in the life” as known to those living in Murfreesboro in the 18th and 19th centuries. This educational experience is designed specifically for 4th grade students and supports the Social Studies North Carolina Standard Course of Study and its focus on the history of North Carolina.

Local schools who have pre-registered for the event include Ahoskie Christian School, Ahoskie Elementary School, Colerain Elementary School, Gatesville Elementary School, Lawrence Academy, Ridgecroft School, Riverview Elementary School, Weldon Elementary Global Academy, West Bertie Elementary School, and Windsor Elementary School.

The Historic Murfreesboro Commission has received a $1,000 grant to cover the cost of student admission.

Tours will begin at 9:15 am and the events of the day will conclude by 1:30 pm. Groups should plan to arrive no later than 9 am. Parking is available in the public lot on Sycamore Street behind the Elizabeth S. Parker Memorial Library and adjacent to the grounds of Hertford Academy.

The day will be filled with numerous hands-on activities where the students can create, learn and play. Students should bring their own lunches, however, bottled water will be provided.
