Nell and her husband Trixie owned and operated the Sand Banks Service Station together until 1975. In 1980 she received her nursing degree and worked at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital for 22 years, retiring in her seventies. She was a true caregiver who gave comfort to many of her loved ones in their times of need.

A self-taught artist who would share and teach others her passion for art, she could paint on anything. An avid gardener, Nell had a special touch with flowers. Her beautiful yard was always full of flowers and birds. Feeders and bird baths adorn the yard among the azaleas, dogwoods, and day lilies, and the birds made her place their home.

She loved her family the most. Surviving are her two daughters, Katherine Morris (Rufus) of Aulander and Rose Hudgins (Wayne) of Kill Devil Hills; her sons, Johnny Long (Amy), Mike Long (Anne) and Steve Long (Joan), all of Eure; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, Mack and Frank Powell, both of Eure; and many nieces and nephews that she dearly loved.

A graveside service was held Friday, March 24, 2023 at 11 a.m. in the Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery where she was laid to rest beside her husband, near the church where she was a life-long member. Her nephew, the Rev. Tracy Gregory, and family friend, the Rev. Wade Bennett officiated. Friends were invited to visit with the family in the social hall immediately following the service or all other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Cool Spring Baptist Church, P.O. Box 10, Eure, NC 27935.
