MURFREESBORO – Murfreesboro officials are hoping they’ll be able to secure grant or loan funding in order to continue more infrastructure improvements in town.
The town council approved two resolutions as a part of the application process during their regular meeting on April 12.
The first resolution requesting state loan and/or grant assistance is for a water meter replacement project.
Town Administrator Carolyn Brown noted that the resolution is the last thing they need in order to submit their application for funding.
Without much discussion, the resolution passed with a motion from Craig Dennis and a second from Berna Stephens. The vote was unanimous among those in attendance. Council member David Brown was unable to attend the meeting.
The second resolution was also to request state loan and/or grant assistance, but the focus of that project will be for Main Street and Third Street water line replacement.
For this project, Brown shared photos to the council of the recent water line break on Main Street that happened near the end of March. She noted that there is concrete under the road’s asphalt, which made it even more difficult for workers to access the pipe for repairs.
Council member Jay Revelle explained that the concrete was poured back during World War II to reinforce the road in case of emergency.
The water lines on Main Street, he continued, are cast-iron pipe that were put during the 1930s. The aging pipe is now slowly splitting apart, and becomes more strained by the repairs each time.
“We’ve got a lot of things that need to be fixed in this town, but the Main Street water line, in my opinion – and it’s just mine – is crucial. And somehow, we need to find some money to get it done,” Revelle said.
Stephens motioned to adopt the second resolution, and Revelle seconded. That vote was unanimously in favor as well.
Brown told the News Herald that they are hoping to receive $1 million for each project.
