Blackwell, Britt earn HCPS top honors

WINTON – April Blackwell and Dr. Lyndsay Britt have respectively earned the District Teacher of the Year and District Principal of the Year honors as bestowed for 2023-2024 by Hertford County Public Schools.

Blackwell was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the education community and dedication to her students. HCPS officials say that Blackwell is an exemplary teacher who has spent 24 years inspiring and educating students.

HCPS Superintendent Dr. Jesse Pratt said that Blackwell’s passion for teaching and her commitment to her students have earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues and the broader education community. She has gone above and beyond to create engaging and challenging learning experiences, to support struggling students, and to foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment.

“Mrs. Blackwell is an outstanding educator who embodies everything great about teaching,” said Dr. Pratt. “Her passion for learning, her dedication to her students, and her commitment to excellence inspire all of us. We are thrilled to recognize her as our District Teacher of the Year for 2023-2024.”

For Dr. Britt, the Principal of the Year Award recognizes her exceptional leadership skills, commitment to student achievement, and unwavering dedication to her school community.

Dr. Britt has served as the principal of Hertford County Early College High School for six years. During her tenure, she has transformed the school into a thriving learning community known for its academic excellence, supportive culture, and commitment to equity and inclusion.

Under Dr. Britt’s leadership, HCECHS has achieved impressive academic gains and has become a model for other schools in the district. She has worked tirelessly to provide her students with high-quality instruction, to support her teachers’ professional growth, and to engage parents and community members in the school’s mission.

“Dr. Britt is an outstanding leader who has made an incredible impact on her school and the broader community,” said Dr. Pratt. “Her vision, her dedication, and her unwavering commitment to excellence make her an inspiration to all of us. We are thrilled to recognize her as our District Principal of the Year for 2023/2024.”

As the HCPS District Principal of the Year, Dr. Britt will serve as an ambassador for the district, sharing her knowledge, expertise, and passion for education with colleagues, policymakers, and the broader community. She will also be considered for the North Carolina Principal of the Year award.
