Driver in custody after 150+ mph chase

WINDSOR – A New Mexico man faces multiple charges after his failed attempt to elude arrest during a two-county chase on Sunday where speeds reached in excess of 150 miles per hour.
Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin 18-year-old Joshua Wayne Specht is charged with felony flee to elude, misdemeanor failure to heed blue lights/sirens, misdemeanor reckless driving/wanton disregard, misdemeanor expired registration tag, and misdemeanor speeding.
Ruffin said the incident began shortly before 6 a.m. on Sunday at which time Bertie Sheriff’s Sgt. Dakota Young clocked a passenger car at a speed of 82 mph in a 55 mph zone, traveling south on Hwy 13/17 Bypass near Grabtown Road.
Young attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but it sped away with speeds reaching in excess of 150 mph.
Windsor Police, Williamston Police, and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office assisted Sgt. Young and other deputies in the pursuit.
The vehicle wrecked on Prison Camp Road, near Roberson Chapel Road, southwest of Williamston. Specht was uninjured in the crash and taken into custody without incident.
After being discharged from ECU Health Bertie Hospital, Specht was transported to the Bertie County Magistrates Office where he was served with a Magistrates Order and transported to Bertie Martin Regional Jail and confined under a $25,000 secured bond.
